QM2 History

Queen Mary 2 was announced to the world on June 8, 1999 as "Project Queen Mary".

This announcement was for the design and development of what would become the largest Ocean Liner ever built - and the next step in Ocean Liner evolution.

Cunard's Norwegian shareholders were informed by Larry Pimentel, the line's President & COO at the time, who said, "The project will lead to development of the heaviest liner ever built - the epitome of elegance, style and grace."

"It is our objective to build a new generation of ocean liner that will be the very pinnacle of the shipbuilder's art; the realization of a dream of another time. Our goal is nothing less than to create a new Golden Age of sea travel for those who missed the first," he said.

Pimentel's announcement was to be followed by the first meeting of a new "Project Queen Mary" planning team which met regularly during the design phase of the concept to develop and finalize plans and vessel features.

The concept developed into the next evolution of a true ocean liner and not a substitute for Cunard's elegant top liner Queen Elizabeth 2 despite what cruise critics would have had you believe. Rather the two Queens would become running mates from 2003 to 2008.

Queen Mary 2 made her triumphant debut on January 12, 2004, although many people had seen the vessel prior to that date during her trials and shake down cruises. Queen Mary 2 was deployed on the North Atlantic, joined twice yearly when her elder sister Queen Elizabeth 2 repositioned between her new role of offering British based cruises, and the annual tradition of a Cunard World Cruise, first started in 1922.

Queen Mary 2 will bid a final farewell to QE2 later this year when the two liners undertake two tandem crossings, marking QE2's final farewell to the USA.

Queen Mary 2 has made many headlines since her introduction into service, none more so than her triumphant arrival into Sydney Harbour in February 2007. She was joined later that day by QE2. Thousands of Sydneysiders gathered on the banks (and boats) to witness the 'meeting of the Queens'.

Queen Mary 2 is the new breed of liner, and has achieved something that is in true Cunard tradition - breaking the barriers of shipbuilding.

.
In December 2007 Queen Mary 2 was joined by Queen Victoria. These two new Queen's, will be joined in 2010 by the new Queen Elizabeth.
