For over a year now (with the exception of a visit to the Dubai Dry Dock where she was given an extensive exterior overhaul) she has remained idle. She is tied up just a few hundred metres ahead of where her final passengers had left her.
To the delight of QE2 fans worldwide, it appears as if she is being cared for and remains in an excellent condition. Her mighty MAN B&W engines are still running, powering essential services and lighting throughout the ship. As she is idle (and not sailing) the nine engines are cycled through one at a time so that they each remain in good working order.
Since her arrival at Port Rashid, QE2 has been "kept company" by a number of cruise ships. Her former fleet-mates QM2 and Queen Victoria visited in 2009 (during their World Cruises) and QM2 has visited again in 2010.
Today the world watches and waits for someone to save the QE2. While cared for by Nakheel, her future is uncertain and she is costing her owners a vast sum of money in upkeep. QE2 is the most magnificent Ocean Liner of our time, and she is ready and able to sail to any port in the world for use as a hotel or convention / exhibition centre.
It is the hope of many that she will soon enjoy a retirement fit for a queen!
